Recap: East Canton 59, St. Thomas Aquinas 55 (Or, Hornets Jump Out Early, Hold On For Sweet Tournament Life)

The first quarter answered a lot of the questions as to how last night's game would be played. Ryan Snyder, one of the counties top scorers from St. Thomas, was questionable with a ankle injury. His mobility, or lack there of, set the Hornets on a course ultimate aggressive play. The ability of St. Thomas to handle East Canton's pressure also showed as the Hornets were extremely disruptive. Then came the big “what if.” What if East Canton gives any kind of offensive shooting performance like they did in the sectional final against Ursuline? Well, that “what if” was quickly nixed in the first quarter when Burfield got hot from three-point range and Bradley connected on a few crafty, patient drives. The Hornets put up 20 points in the first quarter, almost equally their output for an entire half against Ursuline. So with all those questions out of the way and the Hornets clutching a 9 point lead, the rest of the game was to play out like a television sitcom.

The second quarter began the let-down for the Hornets. It did not appear on the score baord because they actually increased their lead by 2 more points. But, the defensive intensity was slowly wearing off and the rebounding edge was starting to tilt towards Aquinas. Aquinas also debuted some junk defenses and face-guarding techniques on Burfield. I felt these really slowed the Hornets down and got EC out of rhythm. The lack of intensity was most evident in the post defense of EC. In the first quarter STA's gaurds couldn't get a look in the post, and if they did, EC had the post surrounded. The 2nd quarter STA got easy post feeds for scores. All that said, the Hornets take an 11 point lead into halftime.

During the 3rd quarter STA cut into the Hornet lead by five points. More STA junk defense was really taking the Hornets away from what they wanted to do. Additionally, STA began to look like more of an aggressive team. Holding on to a six point lead going into the fourth quarter, it would come down to ball security and free throws for the Hornets.

In the 4th quarter STA started to get a rhythm. They scored 22 points that quarter, as many as their output in the 2nd and 3rd quarters combined. East Canton didn't back down though. They handled STA's press and made them pay for extending their pressure. Leading by 6, EC got a huge play from Campbell finishing a lay up off of a press break for an and-1. He knocked down the free throw to give EC a nine point lead, 49-40. STA didn't stop scoring but EC managed to match the Aquinas points by knocking down their free throws. Smith stepped up to the line for a 1-and-1 and nailed both. STA quickly scored. Campbell got fouled for a 1-and-1 and nailed both. STA missed their free throws and it was back to foul line for EC. Bradley, now in the double bonus, made the two he was given. STA then scored two baskets in a row to cut the lead to 7, 55-48. Burfield split a double bonus and STA wasted no time in scoring and then calling what seemed like an endless amount of time outs. Smith put the game away with 3 out of 4 free throws in the final minute. STA had prayer when they hit a 3-pointer in the final minute but the EC lead was never in serious jeopardy.

The leading scorers were Campbell 15, Burfield 12 , Bradley 11, Smith 11 and Slater with 8. Bradley added 5 assists to go with his point total and Smith and Campbell each grabbed 5 boards. Leading the way for STA was Bond with 16. Dempsey added 10 and Duplin 9. Their leading scorer hobbled around and only managed to score 4 points. It's hard for me to take pleasure in seeing a kid play his final game in this condition. And I feel even worse for him after seeing him try to drive around Jow Cartwright on one leg. That ain't happenin.

Things I Think I Think
I think I'm proud of the way East Canton's student section held their own against the STA group. STA had more students and experience of being an irritant all year to opposing teams. The Hornet fans traded cheers and held their own all night. They did have one thing in their favor though. That was the “SCOREBOARD, SCOREBOARD, SCOREBOARD!”

I think Friday night's game should be a dousy. Campbell-Memorial's athleticism and quickness are unparalleled to any team on East Canton's schedule this year. They looked like a Streetsboro on steroids to me.

I think the assertiveness of Stu Campbell lately deserves a round of applause. He's gotten tougher as the year has gone by and is almost indispensable in late game situations. He even had a caller from an in-state university after the game. The only other college recruiter to appear for the Hornets was from the Paul Mitchell College of Hair Care for Justin Whitacre. Gotchaaaa

Hornets face the Tommies for the 12th time in school history. East Canton is currently 4-7.

1966-67 East Canton 57-52
1967-68 East Canton 61-52
1974-75 St. Thomas Aquinas 72-53
1977-78 St. Thomas Aquinas 58-56
1978-79 East Canton 51-38
1991-92 St. Thomas Aquinas 49-42
1992-93 St. Thomas Aquinas 45-43
1994-95 St. Thomas Aquinas 68-65
1995-96 St. Thomas Aquinas 81-66
1996-97 St. Thomas Aquinas 83-78
1999-00 East Canton 73-62

The games in '75 and '95 were tournament games, and the 1999 game was the first win at East Canton for Coach Spaulding who would lead the Hornets to their latest regional appearance one year later.

The series was suspended during the '80s, allegedly because a highly intelligent, but not very athletic role player had dominated the Pangrazio boys in the CYC leagues for years and Coach P wanted no part of them.

Game Day!! Get Some!!!

I may know all the words to their alma mater, but I would bleed blue and gold.......if I bled at all.

Anybody have the stats from the Rep for the Aquinas kids?

Median Family Income: $125,000

Attend College: 93%

Average ACT: 24

lol

Basketball wise I have no statistical information, but a few observations:

They are much like we are: on the small side but relatively quick. We seem to shoot it better (friday night NOT an example) and they seem to slash a little better. Both teams are very versatile and are veteran squads with good chemistry.

Will probably come down to defense and toughness (music to my ears) and I like us on both accounts....of course, I am VERY bias.

Good Luck Hornets.

Snyder was averaging about 23ppg last time I saw the county leaders

Average ACT score and college matriculation rate a little low; While you could have been commended on the family income level, sadly you labeled it as the median while the figure you cite is closer to the statistical mean. The median would be much lower.

Best of luck to both teams.

hornets win! Go STU! go East Canton- you guys deserve everything you got- hard work gets you far! great job tonight!

To appease Big Money, I will suspend my usual "facts should not get in the way of really funny posts" rule.

Statistical mean:$125,000

ACT of 24 is dead on. I will explain at dinner Sunday as a public explanation could seem mean spirited.

My Medieval Latin is rusty so I have no idea what matriculate means but I do know that 95% of the students enroll in a college or university

Don't blame me for that one, Mr. Gilbert as 95% is, in fact, higher than 93%.

Great win last night for your Hornets. As you know I am a reluctant Aquinas fan and I was very happy with the spirit they showed given the challenges that were presented.

Bring home that district title.

Sam Gilbert said...

Thank you, but they are all of our Hornets...not just mine.

I agree they were spirited in the face of all their challenges. My favorite challenges were the one where our guards D'd the heck out of their guards and the one where our big guys outplayed their big guys.

Great game, and as I tried to tell all of the St. Thomas friends I saw last night: "nice job, good season."

p.s.--please pass along to the higher ups that Max was unanimously chosen as "nicest knight". Although he did cuss at Slater once, I assume Josh cussed at him several times....

Well, Stu had a chance to dunk on the same hoop he allegedly threw down on during a tournament practice. Instead of trying to appease the EC crowd, who will be endeared to him anyway after that performance, he did the classy thing and chose a lay-up to not rub it in on the STA fans. He got slightly too overwhelmed with sportsmanship when he missed the lay-up. But the myth lives on! LET STU DUNK

Sam Gilbert said...

The myth lives. I continue to earn lots of interest on my "save up to pay Stu if he dunks" account. Jordan may be able to use it for college. I can only assume Spurgeon's alleged video proof was doctored. I should have been suspicious when Joe could also be seen dunking in the background.

I'll post my observations later....

I don't think the matter if Stu allowed to dunk or not... I do not think Coach Spugeon would be against Stu dunking! He jsut needs to gout and throw it down...

Anonymous said...

I would definately have dunked the ball viscously had it been me.I still have the Aquinas student section cheer in the back of my head. The one they did during warm up.You all remember ..."OVERRATED OVERRATED......".But Stu is a classy player ,and i believe he rubbed it in even better by having his best performance of the year.
GO Stu ...Go Hornets...Get Some

P.S. Someone cussed at Brandon??I cant even imagine...

Sam Gilbert said...

Yes, we are all SHOCKED that someone like Brandon could get under the skin of an opponent. Apparently the post players at St. Thomas, Ursuline,Tusky Valley, Sandy Valley, Minerva, Malvern, Tuslaw, Streetsboro, Windham, Waterloo, Woodridge, Rootstown, Garfield, and especially Mogadore don't share Brandon's happy-go-lucky, even tempered attitude on the floor.

I assume it will be all hugs and handshakes tomorrow with the red Devils..........

Sam,in all seriousness I do recall the second Woodridge game(where we beat up on them pretty good).Brandon did give Anthony Kelly a hug and a handshake after the game.Speaks volumes about Brandon, the team, and the school in my humble opinion.
