Game No. 13 At East Canton (Student Body Theme: Nerd Night)
What Happened: Domination, plain and simple
The Star: Zell Bradley - 18 points (8 in the second quarter) and 7 assists
The Co-Star: Sam Elseser – Season high in points with 13, including 6-6 on FTs
Highlight: Aaron Kennedy nailed a 3-pointer near the end of the game to make the Hornet lead 40 points even
Lowlight: In the 4th quarter, Whitacre pulled off a 3 step travel on a fast break. With the game out of reach, it became a comical moment. I'm fairly positive it would have even have been called in the NBA.
Tidbits
-East Canton went 24/28 from the free throw line. It's nice to have such a solid performance from the foul line since the Hornets have struggled as a team shooting fouls at other points in the season. Sam and Burfield both made all 6 of their attempts.
--85 points is East Canton's high for the year. Woodridge did not put a single player in double figures. This is also the first time the Hornets have not allowed an opposing team to put a single player in double figures
---East Canton forced 27 turnovers and only committed 10. The defensive intensity and commitment was relentless and undeniable.
----Burfield scored 22 points and 6 steals. 13 of his points came in the first quarter. Smith and Cartwright each contributed 9
-----With 5:07 remaining in the 3rd quarter, Bradley was fouled on a shot attempt. It resulted in him hitting the floor and a Woodridge player falling on top of him. The fall of the Woodridge player was actually more of a Yokozuna “Bonzai Splash.” Several East Canton players tried to help clear Bradley of the Woodridge player who took offense to being removed from the pile so quickly. The Woodridge player earned a technical for a petty shove but all the Hornets kept their composure.
------Coach Spurgeon was on "Stark Sports Talk Live"this morning. He referred to Smith as "The Master of The Half Inch" for his rebounding prowess and Burfield as a "five tool player"for his overall game improvement.
-------13-0. Tuslaw at home on Tuesday. Student body is having a "black out." Bzzzzzzzzzz
The JV was defeated 49-34. Shultz, Kennedy and Taylor all hit double figures in points
Editors Note: Look for Sam Gilbert in the background of the Bonzai video jumping up and down

Notes and Observations:
1. I am shocked #10 from Woodridge and every other point guard they inserted didn't just change and get on the bus at half time. It was brutal for them out there. At one point he turned helplessly to his bench and told the bench "Coach, they are EVERYWHERE!!"
2. Good crowd enthusiasm feeding off of the great defensive effort on the floor.
3. I thought I would be happy when Slater was on the right side of the technical foul pile-up. Strangely.....I'm a little sad. Note to Slater: wait until baseball season to cheer me up.
4. Seating is starting to be at a real premium. Two guys from FOX Sports paid $20 each for VIP seating on the stage.
5. Best defensive week in the history of East Canton basketball since they held East Sparta and Malvern to 18 points each in back to back games in 1939.....of course there was a jump ball after every made basket then, but I do recall them really being able to bring some pressure in the standing room only Davis Gym.
I have heard that admission to tuesday game vs tuslaw will be 1,200. Everybody else after that will be turned away. Is this true?
1,200 is the Smith gym capacity. The community loves basketball and has always been supportive, even during the recent lull. But renewed success and a host of big games (including Tuslaw) threatens to burst the gym at the seams. I think every interested fan will get in, but I do want them to think ahead as we host more quality opponents with good fan bases.
I want to give an additional point to support Sam's notes and observations:
Late in the third quarter...number 32 for Woodridge got a rebound...Was immediately guarded by Brandon and rifled his outlet pass to Joe who immediately laid-in a basket. At that momement his coach looked at him with a "Why would you do that" shrug, to which #32 mouthed "They're everywhere" and hung his head like a lost puppy.
Priceless...
Ok...help this old man out...what is a blackout?
For the "blackout" the student section will hope to have all its members dress totally in black...It is another theme from our "bleacher creatures".
Thank You Mr. Divot.Even tho I'm not a student,I am entertaining the thought of painting my face(Slater Style)for the Mogadore game.
P.S. I was reading through some of the older posts and found this:
ephraim said...
haha you guys play heritage. lol
I wonder where he or she is now??
I assume ephraim is still waiting on line at the courthouse to have his name legally changed, or at least changed to a more phonetic spelling to spare his future offspring from the horrors of entering kindergarten without the built up confidence to say "no, really, that is how you spell my name".......
Can anyone else see a connection to the full "wolf" moon that was out on Friday, the Hornets staunch defense and the amount of hair on Cartwright's arms and legs??? It's practically undeniable
I think Ephraim is working at a church and taking masters classes at Kentucky Christian University
I tend to think of him as a one-man wolf pack. But when I saw Zell, I knew he was one of Joe's own. And the wolf pack... it grew by one. So there... there were two of them in the wolf pack... Joe was alone first in the pack, and then Zell joined in later. And six months ago, when I saw Ryan and Josh, I thought, "Wait a second, could it be?" And now I know for sure, we just added two more guys to the wolf pack.
I agree this Sam person's #1 - Woodridge should've listened to the "Fancy Pants" motivational song from SNL and met on the bus after half time.
